War: Leave It to the Men In 1782, America introduced the first female soldier to serve in an American military unit. Women have played a vital and important role since then when it comes to the military. During the World Wars, the importance of female soldiers was ever so important. While the men were at war, they filled in numerous jobs that were left vacant by the men overseas fighting to help keep the economy and America running smooth. Although women have proven their worth to the United States Military, there still is a place that their presence is not, and should never be needed. That place is on the front lines where all the action takes place during the war. As mentioned before, the front lines of combat are not the place for women. There is a laundry list of why women should not be in combat, but first let s start with the fact that women are simply not built to be equally strong as men. When it comes to combat operations, or even training for combat operations. The training is highly demanding both physically, and mentally. According to a physical strength capacity test which measures the lifting capabilities required for most combat jobs in the military, there are several lifting demands that include light, medium, moderately heavy, heavy (over 50lbs), and very heavy (over 100lbs). Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides; the most expensive movie ever made; cost approximately $378.5 million and that was five years ago. This isn’t surprising since history is witness to a rising trend in money spent on movies, even after adjusting for inflation, however, their impact on the industry isn’t as large as their budgets. The Inequality of William Shakespeare and the Fictional Sister Judith In Virginia Woolfs Shakespeares Sister, she tells a story about how women were treated and the opportunities they didnt have as an intelligent writer, as compared to those of the men during the Elizabethan era (Shakespeares era). She wonders why there were no women writers during this time. All authors were men and their portrayals of women were usually as a person importance. While in reality they were the complete opposite. Lacking historical evidence, she makes up Judith, an imaginary twin sister of Shakespeare, who is Just as talented as her famous brother, but because she is a woman does not have the same opportunities to learn and write as he did. She questions what kind of life would this imaginary sister have lived compared to her brother. Woolf was amazed at how women were treated. Women had a difficult time pursuing their creative talents; they were expected to tend to the households chores and children, nothing else. They historically had few legal rights, nd could be treated as property by fathers and husbands. Not only were women rarely allowed to pursue careers or any type of creative endeavor, as Woolf points out, they werent thought to be gifted enough or bright enough to do so. Even the women viewed themselves as being inferior to men when it came to their intellectual and creative pursuits. She believes a persons state of mind must be clear of all negative things in order for it to be creative. If a woman did write, shed be a nervous wreck and her writing wouldnt be as good because it would be written with anger nd bitterness. Woolf talks about the portrayals of women written throughout history. If woman had no existence save in the fiction written by men, one would imagine her a person of the utmost importance heroic and mean; splendid and sordid; infinitely beautiful and hideous in the extreme (pg. 694). When, in fact, this was not true. Women of this time couldnt read, were snubbed, slapped, beaten and considered property of their husbands. They didnt have the same rights as a man and were not encouraged to be an artist. Woolf brings up the fact that although they re in poetry from cover to cover, theyre all but absent from history. The only thing that can be found is a few statements about the legal rights of women (which there werent many), and the imaginative portrayals that men write about them. Any works that had the possibility of being written by a woman was most likely signed, Anonymous or signed with the name of a man. Women were not concerned with being famous like men were, it wasnt that important to have their name written on their works. What was important was Just the simple fact of having the chance to ave had anything they written published at all. The playing field was completely unequal tor men and women. Woolt wrote, Any woman born witn a great gitt would certainly have gone crazed, shot herself, or ended her days in some lonely cottage outside the village, half witch, half wizard, feared and mocked at (pg. 698). She said this because a girl during this time could not live a free life, she was not allowed to walk the streets alone, nor could she work at or attend any plays unescorted. In fact, all women parts in a play were portrayed by men. If she tried, she ould have been hindered and disliked by other people. This would cause her to become stressed and bitter making her writing twisted with emotions. A woman that was born with a gift of poetry was an unhappy woman, a woman at strife against herself (pg. 699). The conditions of a womans life were detrimental to her ability to write, not only physically, but psychologically. Woolf shows this by providing facts about Judiths conflicting values and desires she would have been dealing with during her time. In order for the brain to be creative, it needs to be set free from all hings that are hostile. People, by nature, are vulnerable to discouragement and are affected by the opinion of others. The mind of an artist, she says, must be incandescent There must be no obstacle in it, no foreign matter unconsumed (pg. 703). Shakespeare used writing as an art, not as a way of self expression. This is what made Shakespeares writings so great, he didnt try to protest, to preach, to proclaim an injury, to pay off a score, or to make the world a witness of some hardship or grievance (pg. 704). Therefore his poetry flowed from him free and nimpeded. Woolf takes us back in time with her creation of Judith Shakespeare. She is able to show us with facts that it was impossible for women to write during this time because of how they were treated and looked upon. They were unequal to men, in fact, they were below them. She illustrates that there was no way that women could have competed with men in literary achievements. Woolf questioned why women did not write during the Elizabethan era and was able to show the relationship between women and literature without her personal opinion. She did this by having an objective view on the treatment of women and how a woman would have been susceptible to internalizing the belief that they were not capable of being able to write the same kind of plays that Shakespeare did. The obstacles, the distractions and the discouragements women had to deal with shows why the bookshelves are empty of works written by them. Her creation of Judith, the imaginary twin sister was proof of this. Although, she shared the same talent as her brother, her life had a different end because she was a woman.

Self esteem Essay Running Head: ATHLETES Self esteem Essay VS. NON-ATHLETES SELF ESTEEM Self Esteem in Athletes Compared to Non-athletes The correlation of playing competitive sports at college level and self esteem are measured. Subjects were given the Barksdale self esteem questionnaire to fill out and levels of self esteem are measured by scores out of one hundred. The subjects are then separated into categories determined by gender and whether they played sports at the college level. The results indicated that the elite athletes have a higher self esteem than non athletes. The survey also revealed that women have a slightly higher self esteem than men. These findings agree with our hypothesis that athletes will have a higher level of self esteem than non athletes will. Self Esteem in Athletes Compared to Non-Athletes Self esteem is defined as the esteem or good opinion of ones self; Vanity( Patterson p.201). It is Defined by The New Websters Dictionary as ones evaluation of ones worth as a person based on an assessment of the qualities that make up the self-concept ( Shaffer G-9). Every one has known someone with fantastically high self esteem and someone with extremely low self esteem. It always seems to be the football captain or head cheer leader with high self esteem and the geeky computer nerd with the low self esteem. This research has set out to prove or disprove this theory. This paper will discuss in detail the method used to collect the information, the results, and the summary and conclusions of the research. It is our hypothesis that athletes will score higher on the questionnaire than non-athletes. Self esteem, as stated earlier, is a very popular term which seems to be studied a lot. In reviewing many journal articles on the topic it was found that, indeed their was a lot of research on self esteem but not research in the area of athletics and self esteem. The research that we chose to take a closer look at that directly linked to our research was a journal in the journal of college student development called; A comparison of college athletic participants and non-participants on self esteem. As well as looking at that research we also referred to the Encyclopaedia of human intelligence and an interesting article about exercise and cognitive functioning. The purpose of this research then is to find out of levels of self esteem differ in athletes and non athletes. The hypothesis drawn was that athletes would prove to have a higher overall average of self esteem when compared to non athletes. The null hypothesis is that their will be no difference between the two groups. Goals of this research are to satisfy some curiosity in the area and maybe dispel of some long reaching stereo types. It was decided that the goal would best be reached through a questionnaire given to people to fill out that would evaluate their self esteem. After going through many the Baarksdale self esteem evaluation no.69 , it was decided on as being the most thorough and the one most pertaining to he research. Some questions at the end were added asking for age, sex, and whether or not they play competitive sports. These questions were added so we could separate them onto the respective categories: athlete/non athlete. Our control group would be the group that does not play on a sports team. The athletes would be compared to them. The questionaries were handed out randomly. The people in our control group were selected randomly from the public. We simply found people and asked them to complete the self esteem survey. The athletes were not selected randomly. We chose to use our resources as current athletes. Self-awareness theory: The theory that self-focused attention leads people to notice self-discrepancies, thereby motivating either an escape from self-awareness or a change in behaviour (Duval, Wicklund, 1973). In summary, the relatively unusual state of self-awareness may occur when self-focus makes us aware of ourselves as objects of perception. This typically leads us to self-discrepancies between the self and some standard, which in turn has self-esteem and motivational .
