I started filling out the MIT application the day it became available (I actually think I got Part I in about four hours after it was posted online) so that Id have plenty of time to just roll the essay topics around in my head and wait for inspiration. Thats the thing about writing for me, I cant force myself to write something within a given prompt, I have to just wait until I randomly come up with the perfect plan or idea and then I run with it. Thats why although I filled out almost every part of my application starting on August 1st I didnt start filling out my main essay until around October 1st. It scared my parents that I hadnt even thought about the essay, let alone started writing it, with only a month left. I, however, wasnt worried, because until October 1st I hadnt had the perfect idea, something to write about that actually said who I was. You will probably run into this while applying to colleges, especially if youre doing it right. If youre cranking out applications like an assembly line worker you may not have time to just wait for the perfect essay so youll have to rely on writing skills alone. I suggest you pick the school you most want to attend and just mull over the essay topics. Dont necessarily think about them, but just remember them and see what happens during day-to-day life that would help make that essay the best it can be. This post is called discovering yourself because as much as you think you know about yourself, by the end of the college application process you will know so much more. It makes you think about what truly matters in your life, what aspects do you feel are more important than others, what do you value? Is band more important than Model UN? You only have room for a couple of activities, some may have to be dropped, which will they be? On MITs application youll have to remember what youve done over the last several summers and pick the things that you feel helped shape you. Youll also have to find something that you do just for fun, which was actually one of the harder things to write in my application. I do so many things for fun, which one was the one I find most important? Have you ever just sat down and thought about the one thing you do for fun that youd put above all of the others? When youre done filling out an application, if youve done it correctly, youll have a boiled down version of you. In theory youve dug deep and figured out what matters in your life, transferred it to paper, and can only hope that admissions will like what they see. Writing what you hope admissions wants to see is a dangerous dangerous game to play. You need to be a good fit for MIT and if an application gets you accepted but doesnt reflect who you are, you may be absolutely miserable here and will have nobody to blame but yourself. Youll want to yell and scream at MIT and everybody around you, but youll actually know that it was because you lied about who you were and you get to enjoy the consequences. I hope applying to college is as meaningful for you as it was for me. A big part of the reason Im an admissions blogger now is because of the college application process and how much I gained from it. I wouldnt be nearly as willing to help people and answer questions if I had been dishonest or studied to the test because then I wouldnt know if I actually belonged here. I do belong here, because that application was me, and I know that when MIT accepted that application they were going to get the student they read about. Enjoy the process and learn a lot, you wont regret it in the slightest. As a little present Ive built a handy-dandy spreadsheet for you to keep track of all those teacher recommendations and things. Its not perfect (maybe kind of ugly?) but its totally functional and youre welcome to tweak it to your own specifications. Boxes can be either red or green with a date. Red indicates that the action has not taken place yet, green with a date lets you know when it has. This template is set up with the colleges I was going to apply to but feel free to change the names/colors of the columns to match your college preferences. Theres another tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet called Mailing Labels. This is a good place to put the addresses to the schools so that you know where to mail all of this stuff. Leaving them is going to be the hardest thing I ever do. From day one they have held my hand and walked me step by step through everything. They do everything for me.Now that I’m 17, I don’t spend a lot of time with them. It’s senior year and I will be going off to college soon. I will move out and live on my own. Bills and credit cards will be mailed to me. What will I do? They’ve always done everything.I remember going to my junior prom and my father jumping in front of the camera every time my mother went to take another shot. Before I left I gave him a hug; his embrace was so warm I almost cried. He told me he loved me, which he rarely does, and told me to have fun. That made my night.I’ve been a daddy’s girl as long as I can remember. He’s my role model and hero. I’ve always said I’m going to be just like him someday. Now I am leaving him. What will he say? How will he react? What will life be like on my own? All I h ave to do is walk across the hall, knock on his door, and there he is whenever I need him. I will be alone. If I knock on the door across the hall, no one will answer. What will I do without them?Mom has been my best friend since I was old enough to remember. If I just want to talk about nothing, she is there. If I’m upset and need someone to talk to, she is there. When I need advice, I always have a place to go. I can have fun with her; she makes me laugh.Loving the thought of living on my own, I still can’t imagine it. I won’t have anyone to watch TV with after my hours of homework or to sit at the table with when dinner is ready. Lonely, cold, dark and silent is how I will feel. As I lie in bed at night, I’ll know the telephone is right beside me, but it just won’t the same. I won’t be able to go to my father in the dining room and say, â€Å"Daddy, can you help me with this physics problem?† I won’t be able to walk into th e kitchen and start a conversation with my mom. I will walk into my kitchen and see no one. Am I mature enough to live on my own? Do I really know right from wrong? I won’t have them there to say that I am not making the right decision. Will I survive in college with a place of my own? What will I do without them? The hardest thing I will have to do is leave them behind.

The Inequality of William Shakespeare and the Fictional Sister Judith In Virginia Woolfs Shakespeares Sister, she tells a story about how women were treated and the opportunities they didnt have as an intelligent writer, as compared to those of the men during the Elizabethan era (Shakespeares era). She wonders why there were no women writers during this time. All authors were men and their portrayals of women were usually as a person importance. While in reality they were the complete opposite. Lacking historical evidence, she makes up Judith, an imaginary twin sister of Shakespeare, who is Just as talented as her famous brother, but because she is a woman does not have the same opportunities to learn and write as he did. She questions what kind of life would this imaginary sister have lived compared to her brother. Woolf was amazed at how women were treated. Women had a difficult time pursuing their creative talents; they were expected to tend to the households chores and children, nothing else. They historically had few legal rights, nd could be treated as property by fathers and husbands. Not only were women rarely allowed to pursue careers or any type of creative endeavor, as Woolf points out, they werent thought to be gifted enough or bright enough to do so. Even the women viewed themselves as being inferior to men when it came to their intellectual and creative pursuits. She believes a persons state of mind must be clear of all negative things in order for it to be creative. If a woman did write, shed be a nervous wreck and her writing wouldnt be as good because it would be written with anger nd bitterness. Woolf talks about the portrayals of women written throughout history. If woman had no existence save in the fiction written by men, one would imagine her a person of the utmost importance heroic and mean; splendid and sordid; infinitely beautiful and hideous in the extreme (pg. 694). When, in fact, this was not true. Women of this time couldnt read, were snubbed, slapped, beaten and considered property of their husbands. They didnt have the same rights as a man and were not encouraged to be an artist. Woolf brings up the fact that although they re in poetry from cover to cover, theyre all but absent from history. The only thing that can be found is a few statements about the legal rights of women (which there werent many), and the imaginative portrayals that men write about them. Any works that had the possibility of being written by a woman was most likely signed, Anonymous or signed with the name of a man. Women were not concerned with being famous like men were, it wasnt that important to have their name written on their works. What was important was Just the simple fact of having the chance to ave had anything they written published at all. The playing field was completely unequal tor men and women. Woolt wrote, Any woman born witn a great gitt would certainly have gone crazed, shot herself, or ended her days in some lonely cottage outside the village, half witch, half wizard, feared and mocked at (pg. 698). She said this because a girl during this time could not live a free life, she was not allowed to walk the streets alone, nor could she work at or attend any plays unescorted. In fact, all women parts in a play were portrayed by men. If she tried, she ould have been hindered and disliked by other people. This would cause her to become stressed and bitter making her writing twisted with emotions. A woman that was born with a gift of poetry was an unhappy woman, a woman at strife against herself (pg. 699). The conditions of a womans life were detrimental to her ability to write, not only physically, but psychologically. Woolf shows this by providing facts about Judiths conflicting values and desires she would have been dealing with during her time. In order for the brain to be creative, it needs to be set free from all hings that are hostile. People, by nature, are vulnerable to discouragement and are affected by the opinion of others. Caught in the machinations of a scheming Claudius and a betraying mother, the dilemmas of Hamlet’s character are the result of his reflective nature rendering him susceptible to shifting moods (Shakespeare, 1982). Thus he may appear indecisive at times while rash and impulsive at others. Yet the key driver of the plot is the intrigues of Claudius the main antagonist who has acquired the throne of Denmark after death of his elder brother. Claudius has another lust that for Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother and very shrewdly exploits her weak character. The scheming of Claudius is central to this theme and Act I, Scene II is most elucidative in this respect. The Scene will connect with Act I, Scene I, where Hamlet’s friends have seen the ghost of his father looming in the darkness. Thus the lighting will have to denote a dark background initially increasing gradually as Claudius makes his entry into the court. Claudius is to be shown in a garrulous mood, indicating his triumph of claiming the throne as well as the hand of the Queen, Gertrude. His dress, demeanor and outlook will be positive and endearing to the audience. Gertrude on the other hand though dressed in regal clothes will denote a melancholy strain in her overall attire, voice and will be shown seeking reassurance in Claudius. Hamlet is still in mourning and his mood will be reflected in the dress to make it very obvious to the audience. The speech by Claudius to the courtiers will connect him with the audience. Thus all lights will have to be focused on him sitting on the throne which will be raised on a pedestal. Gertrude sitting beside him will be at a lower level and a third level will be made for Hamlet. The courtiers will be seated on each side in two to three rows leaving the central space for entry and exit. As Claudius explains to the courtiers the background of his decision to be crowned and marriage to Gertrude, the stage will be brightly lit and lights will on him and Gertrude, shifting focus based on emphasis of his speech. A huge pictorial of the kingdom of Denmark will be in the background, which will be computer simulated towards which the King will gesticulate while explaining his rationale of saving the country. Appropriate lighting from the rear will denote gloom as Claudius explains his reason and brightness after his ascending the throne. Hamlet will enter late in the Scene, slouching to his seat making his mood absolutely evident to the King as well as his mother. This will also set the stage for Claudius’s dialogue explaining his position. His proposal for celebrations and the King’s Rouse will be denoted through background sounds of festivity. As the King and Queen leave the stage, the lighting will be subtly subdued to represent the gloom in Hamlet’s mind. Against this low lights and sounds of celebrations in distance, the sorrow pervading Hamlet’s mind can be effectively portrayed. As Horatio enters, slowly Hamlet will return to reality and prospects of meeting his father’s soul will drive away his gloom. Here again the effects of lighting and sound will be used to accentuate the variation in disposition brought about after Horatio’s declaration of having seen the ghost. As Horatio explains this on the side wings, movement of a ghost will be shown with Hamlet attempting to contact it, thereby showing his attachment to his father’s spirit as well as a sign of hope. At this time the stage will be fully lit while the sound of celebrations in the distance will also increase to indicate that now Hamlet was also full of hope. Coming after this is Scene III which introduces, Hamlet’s love Ophelia. This is ideally situated by Shakespeare, creating anxiety in the audience and increasing hope in Hamlet before the play moves on to Scene IV where Hamlet actually goes in search of the spirit with Horatio. The impatience of the scheming Claudius, the failings of Gertrude and the dilemma of Hamlet in Act I Scene II, sets the stage for unfolding of the plot ahead. The portrayal has to denote transformation from the dark moments of the ghost of King Hamlet in Act I Scene I and the cheery atmosphere portrayed by Claudius leading to the King’s Rouse. To a modern audience, witness to breakdown of the institution of marriage, Claudius’s wedding to Gertrude so soon after the death of her previous husband may not appear as incredulous as it had been to the courtiers of Denmark.
